One of my goals as AD of BET Brand Creative was to engage the audience with Black contemporary art. My stance:
Art doesn’t have to be classist, and the Black audience doesn’t have to be patronized/coddled/limited.
Twenties Season 2 was the perfect storm, with Lena Waithe wanting to lean into the tagline “Your twenties are STILL a work of art” and highlight Black queer creativity in the process.
Enter Corey Pemberton, a multi-disciplinary artist whose work with paint and collage was the perfect visual voice for our Twenties creative.
My focus in this collaboration was to provide creative parameters without being prescriptive; after all Corey’s uncoached vision had created the work that caught our eye in the first place. When dealing with a dope artist sometimes the best plan of action is CONNECT, CONVERSE, CONTEXTUALIZE, and GET OUT THE WAY! A few Zoom meetings/emails/texts and a mood board later, the rest was magic.
The second life of this piece existed in the merchandise and experiential applications I was tasked to create, in time for the Twenties premiere party.
